The French Broad Riverkeeper at the Western North Carolina Alliance is looking for volunteers to help close illegal roads contributing to poor water quality in Pisgah National Forest.

The April 15 and April 16 workdays will be in the Hurricane Creek area of Pisgah National Forest. (These dates are subject to change depending on the weather.)

Volunteers will support contractors by building silt fences, raking, seeding, dragging brush, and other physical activities.

These workdays support a larger effort to improve water quality through the Muddy Water Watch program funded by a National Forest Foundation grant.  Roads, especially illegal roads, are one of the biggest contributors of harmful sediment to streams.

The high gradient streams found in our mountains support a diverse and sometimes endangered assemblage of aquatic life that requires cool, clear water to live.

WNCA will provide all equipment needed for the workdays. Volunteers are asked to bring lunch, two quarts of water, rain gear, sturdy hiking boots or shoes, durable pants and long-sleeved shirts.

Volunteers are asked to participate on one of the workdays but are encouraged to attend both days if possible.

To volunteer, RSVP to Cynthia Camilleri at Cynthia@wnca.org or by calling her at (828) 258-8737, ext. 207.
