Open House at Mountain Research Station

September 5, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

The Mountain Research Station is opening its doors to the public to highlight the work being done in North Carolina to combat the impact of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive pest that is killing hemlocks throughout the eastern range of the tree. They will be offering a tour of the facilities of the Forest Restoration Alliance (FRA) at MRS beginning at 11 a.m. and concluding around 3 p.m.

A poster room on the station will provide information about other hemlock projects in NC. Subjects will include the challenges NC faces with other invasive exotic pests, the hemlock nursery work of the NC Forest Service, the efforts to save surviving hemlocks by the Hemlock Restoration Initiative, research to breed hemlocks resistant to HWA by FRA, the gene conservation work of Camcore, saving hemlocks in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and hemlock silvicultural research of the US Forest Service. Work on American chestnut restoration by The American Chestnut Foundation will also be displayed, and MountainTrue will be displaying information about our work protecting ash trees from the Emerald Ash Borer.
