Your Voice is Needed to Protect Our Mountains and Our Wallets.
Duke Energy has proposed a massive rate hike that would hit North Carolina residents with an 18% increase in residential electricity costs. While MountainTrue works to protect our forests and water, we also fight for healthy, resilient communities. We cannot have healthy communities when our neighbors are forced to choose between medicine and electricity.

What’s at Stake?
- Unfair Profits: Duke is asking for a 10.95% return on equity, placing them at the “top of industry scale” for guaranteed profit.
- The “Dirty” Bill: These hikes fund expensive coal and gas buildouts while ignoring cheaper, cleaner wind and solar options.
- Data Centers vs. Residents: 85% of Duke’s projected new power needs are for data centers, yet residential customers are being asked to shoulder the cost.
- Vulnerable Neighbors: Duke’s Customer Assistance Program is set to expire in 2027, leaving our most vulnerable neighbors without a safety net just as rates skyrocket.
