Join MountainTrue, Conserving Carolina, and local naturalists for a day of exploration and discovery in the heart of the Hickory Nut Gorge on the 10th Annual BioBlitz. The BioBlitz is a fast-paced communal effort to find and identify as many species of plants, animals, and fungi as possible in a specific area. Whether you’re a seasoned biologist or a curious neighbor, your observations help us better understand and protect the incredible biodiversity of Western North Carolina.

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is part social event, part scientific expedition. Armed with the iNaturalist app and guided by experts, we’ll head into the field to document the rare and rugged ecosystems near Gerton, NC.

  • Explore: Navigate diverse terrains with expert naturalists.
  • Learn: Discover how to identify local flora and fauna.
  • Contribute: Every observation you upload becomes part of a global database used by scientists to track environmental health.

Ready to become a citizen scientist? Space is limited to ensure a high-quality experience for all participants and to minimize our impact on the land.

Important Reminders:
There will be a variety of hike options for this event ranging from easy to strenuous. Please leave pets at home. Kids are welcome to attend as long as accompanied by a parent/guardian for the duration of the event.

Parking is limited at the venue so carpooling is encouraged.

Can’t make it to the June BioBlitz? Mark your calendar for August 1, 2026.

Aug 1, 2026 @ 10 am | Buladean Community Center (Bakersville, NC)

Join MountainTrue, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, and the Buladean Community Center for an exploration of the outstanding natural diversity of the Roan Highlands. Attendees will participate in groups with expert naturalists that will guide them in identifying as many species as possible. Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy will open several of their preserves to participants who in turn will collect data that will aid in land protection.

Meet Your Guide

Josh Kelly, Public Lands Biologist

Josh is MountainTrue’s resident expert on the old-growth forests and unique ecosystems of the Southern Blue Ridge. He’ll be on hand to help identify tricky species and explain why the Hickory Nut Gorge is such a vital conservation priority.
