The Environmental Protection Agency is refusing to add microplastics to its list of contaminants to monitor in drinking water, despite growing evidence and concern over the prevalence and dangerous health effects. Add your voice to our call for change.
Why This Matters for All of Us
In June the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its list of contaminents that it will require monitoring of in drinking water, a list called the 6th Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule. This list is required every five years under the Safe Drinking Water Act, naming new substances to be watched for possible future regulation.
Despite the demands of 175 environmental organizations, seven state governors, and more attorney generals, the EPA failed to include microplastics in its proposed the UCMR 6. According to the Safe Drinking Water Act, once seven governors petition for monitoring, the EPA must comply or justify its refusal. This time, they claim that there is not an adequate methodology, although California is already using one successfully.
Join the groundswell of voices demanding that the EPA include microplastics in the UCMR 6. We are learning more every week about the health and environmental dangers of microplastics, from increased chances of cancer, heart disease, and infertility, to fatalities in birds, fish, and other animals. Analyzing the presence of microplastics is the first step in addressing the problem and removing them from our drinking water.
