ADC partnership expands recovery opportunities in Bakersville

Recovery in Western North Carolina remains a long-term effort that often moves forward through a series of connected steps. Each project builds relationships, sharpens priorities, and creates momentum for what comes next.

That progression is underway in Bakersville. MountainTrue’s Appalachian Design Center (ADC) first partnered with the Bakersville Beautification Association and local residents to develop a conceptual design for the Bakersville Creek Walk. Building on that work, ADC helped the Association shape a Downtown Beautification & Façade Improvement Program focused on strengthening the commercial district, supporting local businesses, and encouraging continued investment in the heart of downtown.

The new program extended the momentum already underway and aligned with the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation’s priority to support meaningful community progress. The Association received a $60,000 grant to launch the effort.

ADC will now provide pro bono professional design support to develop practical options for downtown improvements. The program structure will also remain in place beyond this initial award, giving the Association a foundation for continued fundraising and future investment in Bakersville.
