Fall Color Hike to Standing Indian Mountain near Hayesville, NC

Fall color is projected to be at its peak in the lower elevations of the Hiwassee River watershed during the first week of November, making the view from the top of Standing Indian Mountain more amazing than usual.

We’ll use Deep Gap Rd to access the Appalachian Trail for a 5-mile round trip out-and-back hike to the peak at elevation 5,439′. It’s a relatively gentle incline all the way up with only 1,095′ of elevation gain over 2.5 miles; however, like most natural surface trails in the Southern Blue Ridge, there are rocks, roots, and narrow places resulting in a moderate rating. Much of the trip is within the Standing Indian Wilderness.

Well behaved dogs that get along well with others are permitted on this hike.
