Community Overview

Bakersville, the county seat of Mitchell County, is a small but vital service center for surrounding rural communities. Though home to fewer than 500 residents, the town supports a much larger trade area and serves as a gateway for visitors traveling through the Roan Mountain region. The town’s historic core is centered along Cane Creek, which shapes both its public spaces and flood risk.

Hurricane Helene caused widespread damage in Bakersville, affecting homes, businesses, and public spaces throughout the town, with particularly severe impacts along the Creekwalk, downtown infrastructure, and key pedestrian routes.

In early 2025, Bakersville participated in the AIA Architects Foundation’s Community by Design (CxD) process, which helped clarify locally defined priorities for long-term recovery, resilience, and downtown revitalization. Starting in fall 2025, the Appalachian Design Center has been working closely with the Bakersville Beautification Association to advance this momentum. Work has focused on refining project concepts, exploring funding pathways, and preparing for the next phase of community-driven planning.

Post-Helene Challenges

  • Infrastructure & Damage: Hurricane Helene caused widespread damage to downtown building facades and destroyed central community assets, including the town’s iconic gazebo, playground, and fishing piers.
  • Critical Severance: The destruction of the Cane Creek Bridge severed vehicular access to a major downtown parking lot used by local businesses and visitors to the Creekwalk.
  • Recovery Hurdles: Bakersville faces a unique financial constraint; following previous floods, a large portion of land was acquired for floodplain protection, leaving less than 38% of the town’s land base taxable. This limits the town’s ability to self-fund major recovery efforts.

Community Partners

  • Bakersville Beautification Association (BBA): ADC’s primary partner on the Creekwalk restoration and downtown facade programs.
  • Rebuild Bakersville Steering Committee: A group of local volunteers coordinating the town’s long-term revitalization priorities.
