What to expect: Your plants are entering dormancy this month, which is a kind of “hibernation” for the winter. Don’t be surprised if they have no leaves at all! It’s perfectly natural, as this is the time of year that deciduous trees lose their leaves. Also, some of the 3-gallon trees will be 8-10′ (feet) tall. We’ve folded them into a Prius before, but it’s not easy!

Don’t wait until spring to plant! We hold this sale in the fall because the dormant season is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. Planting now gives trees an extra growing season before the stress of summer. The combination of cooler temperatures and rain allows trees to establish their roots, making it easier for them to adjust to extreme heat or drought in the summer. It’s safe to plant trees unless the ground is frozen solid, which rarely happens this far south. If you can stick a spade into the soil, it’s still okay to plant woody trees and shrubs, even if snow is on the ground!
