In the wake of Hurricane Helene, MountainTrue is dedicated to addressing the urgent needs of our community.
Join the collaboration between MountainTrue and the Hemlock Restoration Initiative as we treat hemlocks in an effort to protect them from the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). Eastern and Carolina hemlock populations are declining due to the HWA, a small pest thriving off the hemlockâs stored and available nutrients. MountainTrue and the Hemlock Restoration Initiative are safely treating Eastern and Carolina hemlocks chemically to keep them alive until bio-controls are successfully implemented and we need your help! We are treating hemlocks in DuPont State Recreational Forest on Tuesday, April 26th from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM.
There are so many hemlocks in DuPont State Recreational Forest lining the Little River and other, important smaller tributaries that need immediate attention. Tasks range from physically undemanding data/note taking (a.k.a. looking like a movie director) to measuring DBH and tagging (a.k.a. tree hugging and decorating) to handling and applying chemicals (a.k.a. playing doctor/EMT). Chemical and application method will depend on the situation and will be determined on the day of treatment. We may also prepare trees for a future workday. You can choose what you are comfortable doing in the field. Performing any one of those tasks will make you a Hemlock Hero!
