We believe wise land use and transportation planning makes our region a more equitable, affordable and sustainable place to live for all of us.
Asheville Regional Transit Coalition
MountainTrue is a leading member of the Asheville Regional Transit Coalition, a group that aimsto improve the daily lives and well-being of Asheville’s citizens by improving the quality and availability of public transportation throughout the greater Asheville area. We believe transit service that operates in more areas, for longer hours, and at higher frequencies will greatly benefit local residents and businesses and lead to a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable community.
Asheville and Buncombe county residents cannot wait decades for high quality public transportation, especially those who have no other transportation options for work, school, childcare and daily errands.
During its 30-year history, WNCA (now MountainTrue) has twice prevented logging in the Asheville Watershed, first in 1990 and again in 2004. Eventually the City of Asheville placed a conservation easement over 17,356 acres of the watershed.
In April 2011, WNCA (now MountainTrue) executive director Julie Mayfield's editorial in the Asheville newspaper argued against proposed regulatory reforms that would weaken environmental protections: "Before Congress passed environmental laws in the 1970s, we lived amidst pollution that nobody wants to see again."
