In the wake of Hurricane Helene, MountainTrue is dedicated to addressing the urgent needs of our community.
This hike will explore an old-growth, high elevation oak forest in the proposed Craggy Mountain National Scenic Area. The hike will be partially off trail, traverse steep, rocky terrain, and be very strenuous. During the hike we will discuss tree identification, forest ecology, and traits of old-growth forests, among other topics. There will be 1,000 to 1,500 vertical feet of elevation change on this hike, please keep that in mind when signing up.
This hike will take place on Coxcombe Mountain but we will meet as a group at the Asheville US Forest Service Office before the hike to carpool. There is very limited parking so carpooling will be essential for this trip.
