Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest Walk in Robbinsville, NC 5/20/22

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is one of the Nation’s most impressive remnants of old-growth forest. The forest contains magnificent examples of more than 100 tree species, many over 400-years-old, and some more than 20 feet in circumference and 100 feet tall. This 3,800-acre forest was set aside in 1936 as a memorial to the author of the poem “Trees,” Joyce Kilmer, who was killed in action in France during World War I. This forest, part of the Joyce Kilmer-Slick Rock Wilderness, is maintained in its primitive state. The only way to see this forest is on foot. Registration for this event is required.

Waiting List: Guided River Snorkel in Banner Elk, NC 5/28/22

Join MountainTrue’s High Country water team and take the plunge to explore the unique ecosystems of the Watauga River through a guided snorkel trip. Much like ocean reef snorkeling, river snorkeling allows you an unparalleled viewpoint to explore all the nooks and crannies of your local river. By peeking under the water, you can find yourself swimming alongside darting fish or face-to-face with the tiny insect larvae that feed them. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a Hellbender. MountainTrue will provide snorkels, view buckets, and waders. Please, no children under 13 and we ask that all participants know how to swim. Registration is required.

June Microplastics Sampling in the High Country

Come help sample microplastics! Volunteers collect surface water samples at designated sampling sites the first week of every month to be analyzed at the lab by staff. Data collected from a brief 10-20 minute stream cleanup is submitted to staff.
