MountainTrue is again hosting an Invasive Species workday to control nonnative invasive plants and restore native habitat in Bryson City Island Park. We will primarily be using hand tools to cut invasive shrubs like Chinese privet and then treat the stumps. No prior experience is necessary; we will provide tools and training. All you have to bring is water and energy! Please register in advance so that we will have enough tools, gloves, etc. Let’s work together to continue to improve the wildlife habitat and natural beauty at Island Park!
Visit the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum’s Exhibition Trash Trout Picture Show to learn about microplastics and the collaborative community partnerships with Appalachian State, Watauga Riverkeeper, and New River Conservancy. With trash collected over the past two years, filmmaker and visual artist, Tom Hansell, has created an eye-catching exhibit that speaks volumes to the work being done by our local riverkeepers.
Livestaking is the process of planting live cuttings of dormant trees in the riparian buffer zone along the stream bank which helps filter stormwater runoff, protect vital aquatic habitat, and prevent soil erosion and sediment pollution. As these planted stakes grow into trees, they stabilize the sides of the rivers and creeks where we plant them and reduce the overall amount of sediment and toxins getting into the river. Come plant with us at one of our live staking work days from December through March!
Volunteers collect water samples at designated sites for chemical analysis at a state-certified lab. Come join the VWIN Sampling weekend on December 10th - 11th. Fill out the contact form below to add your name to the volunteer list.

Join MountainTrue's Western Regional Director, Callie Moore to get a crisp start to the New Year with an easy to moderate hike on a section of the Appalachian Trail that's accessible even when snow is on the ground! Check out views of Nantahala National Forest that are only available in winter on this 4-mile round-trip out and back. There is 801 feet of elevation gain over 1.5 miles, but nothing very steep. Bird watching and winter tree identification are additional activities on this outing.
We are back again with our yearly Christmas Tree Recycling Program! Come join MountainTrue as we help people recycle their Christmas trees, lights, and cards.
