Celebrate the arrival of spring with this moderate 6.8 mile out-and-back hike into the Green River Gorge. Guided by expert ecologist and MountainTrue Public Lands Director Bob Gale, we will search out the season’s first ephemeral wildflowers such as trillium, bloodroot, and toothwort. Because the Game Lands lie at a lower elevation, they have milder temperatures, giving us the chance to be among the first to see early spring vegetation and wildflowers. Our path will follow the Green River and offer continuous views of its quiet stretches and splendid rapids. The trail will lead us through a healthy eastern hemlock grove, past many dying hemlocks, and alongside several trees in stages of recovery. As we pass these hemlocks, we will learn about the ongoing threat of the hemlock wooly adelgid in our mountains. Finally, we will hike up to a rock outcrop and enjoy a view of kayakers as they tackle the legendary rapids of the Narrows below.

Our stream teams assess the health of local rivers by collecting and identifying aquatic insects that serve as indicators of water quality. This one day Stream Monitoring Information Exchange (SMIE) workshop will equip you with the skills and knowledge required to join a stream team. The morning will be spent learning about these insects in the lab. We will head out into the field in the afternoon to learn the protocol. All materials, lunch and snacks will be provided. Please wear clothes you can get dirty and bring a water bottle!
Join the Creation Care Alliance and MountainTrue as we share the Climate Interactive’s World Climate Role Playing Experience in collaboration with theCollider’s Climate City Expo Faith Track. This will be an interactive experience that explores global poverty, power, politics and spirituality. This role-playing activity provides participants with an intimate and interactive experience with U.N. Climate negotiations by allowing them to take on the role of various stakeholders and try and address the most pressing climate-related issues we face today. Learn more about World Climate here. He worked as a landscaper for 20 years before joining the fight against non-native invasive species in Western North Carolina. We will discuss some common landscaping plants that are actually invasive, what you can do about them, and what native plants can replace them and support the local environment and pollinators in your own yard. Join us and help restore native plant communities by controlling non-native invasive plants at Richmond Hill Park. This is the City of Asheville’s only forested park and is home to many special native plant and animal species! Volunteers help to stop the spread of harmful non-native invasive species and return native species to the unique park.
We’ll provide all gloves, equipment and necessary instructions. Please bring snacks, water and a rain jacket and wear long pants, long sleeve shirt and closed toe shoes (no open shoes or sandals allowed for safety).
Join MountainTrue's Green Riverkeeper and Liquidlogic Co-founder Shane Benedict for the 9th Annual Green River Spring Cleaning! We'll meet at the Fishtop Access (2302 Green River Cove Rd, Saluda, NC 28773) at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 13 where we will divide into teams then get on the river to pull out as much litter as possible before the summer paddling season. We need paddlers of all skill levels to tackle each section of the Green all the way from the Upper Green below the Tuxedo hydroelectric station, through the Narrows, down the Lower Green, and all the way to Lake Adger. Bring your boat, paddling gear, snacks/lunch, and water, and be prepared to get dirty and wet. After we're done, we'll head to The Gorge Zipline (166 Honey Bee Dr, Saluda, NC 28773) for an after party with awards.
