Back by popular demand! Learn how to identify trees in the winter with Western Region Program Coordinator, Tony Ward on Saturday, January 22 at 1:00. During this walk in the woods, we will discuss the different ways that you can identify trees in your area. This hike is open to all skill levels of tree identifiers! Registration is required.

Special Hike Series: PALentine’s Day Nature Preserve Hike in Gerton, NC (2/13/22)

Calling all women** and nonbinary folks to join us on Sunday, February 13 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for the first hike of a special edition hiking series, MountainTrue Celebrates You! Our first hike along the Florence Nature Preserve will focus on community building, story-telling, and knowledge sharing. We invite you to trek along this trail with us as we exchange stories and knowledge of local plants and river ecology!

Waiting List: Grassland Restoration & Fire Ecology Hike near Alexander, NC (3-25-22)

Join Biologist Josh Kelly on the Grassland Restoration & Fire Ecology Hike. On this hike will explore a shortleaf pine-oak savanna on Sandymush Gameland that is in the process of being restored. We will discuss diverse topics such as fire ecology, bio-physical characteristics of Blue Ridge woodlands and savannas, and native species associated with grasslands. Registration is required.

Wildflower Walk and Garlic Mustard Pull at Max Patch 5/5/22

We will hike the Appalachian Trail and enjoy stunning displays of wildflowers in the largest protected grove of ash trees along the Appalachian Trail. Along the way, we will pull a beginning infestation of Garlic Mustard. In addition to being a noxious weed, garlic mustard makes a fine pesto, and there will be plenty of raw material if folks want to take some foliage home with them. Registration is required for this event.

Waiting List: Lewis Creek Preserve Nature Walk in Hendersonville, NC 6/23/22

Lewis Creek Preserve is an eight-acre preserve protected and managed by Conserving Carolina. MountainTrue Ecologist & Public Lands Director, Bob Gale, will lead a slow hike along the nature trail, interpreting the plant life, wildflowers, and value of pollinators on this property. The boardwalk overlooks an example of the remaining rare Southern Appalachian Bog ecosystems. Bob and MountainTrue have special expertise in managing these bogs and in addressing their threats, including non-native invasive plants. Registration for this nature walk is required.

Waiting List: Craggy National Scenic Area Hike near Barnardsville, NC 7/23/22

Join MountainTrue for a hike in the proposed Craggy Mountain National Scenic Area. The Craggy Mountains are one of the mightiest mountain ranges in eastern North America and are traversed by the Blue Ridge Parkway. The National Forest Lands of the Craggy Mountains have popular support to become a national scenic area designed to permanently protect the scenic and biological values of the area. Join biologist Josh Kelly for a six-mile hike through the spectacular high elevation forests and vistas of the Craggies. Along the way, we will appreciate the flora, fauna, and natural history of the area. Registration for this event is required.
