Virtual Hendersonville Green Drinks: DuPont Forest: A History

On Thursday October 8th, Virtual Hendersonville Green Drinks welcomes author Danny Bernstein to discuss her newest book DuPont Forest, A History. DuPont Forest protects thousands of acres of trees, five lakes and more than one hundred miles of multiuse trails. It took not only the generosity of a multinational company but also Southern Appalachian grit and self-reliance and local activism to make these benefits available to all. DuPont Forest is young, and its future is still unfolding. Author and hiker Danny Bernstein traces the past of DuPont State Recreational Forest and shows its potential. Fall Scenic Hike

Pilot Cove Loop Trail

Join MountainTrue's Ecologist and Public Lands Director, Bob Gale, for a gorgeous and educational hike through Pisgah National Forest. This hike offers breathtaking views of the fall foliage, and if we are lucky, we will catch glimpses of the Monarch Butterfly migration. Due to the pandemic, we are restricting group size for outings to 10 participants. Sign up today!
We will be hiking the Pilot Cove Loop Trail in Pisgah, which is approximately 4 miles long. The trail starts in a lesser known part of Pisgah National Forest and winds upward among the brightly colored sourwood and black gum trees. After opening up onto a beautiful rocky outcrop, the trails travels through recently logged forested as well as much older sections of forest. There are some steep inclines on this trail, but Bob will be making frequent stops to rest and interpret the flora and fauna.

Whiterock Mountain Hike

Bartram Trail at Jones Gap 35°04'33.7"N 83°17'16.6"W, Sugarfork, NC

Join us for a hike on the Bartram Trail, one of North Carolina's premier long distance trails. We'll tackle a 4.6-mile lightly trafficked section near Highlands, NC that provides spectacular views into the Tessentee Valley of Macon County. On this stretch we'll summit Jones Knob and Whiterock Mountain. Though these peaks measure well below 5,000 feet in elevation, they are good examples of a spectacular geological feature found in our region: both are plutons, mountains comprised of erosion resistant rock sporting massive open cliff faces.

Elk Knob Hike

Join MountainTrue in our last-ditch effort to get outside before winter arrives and we're stuck inside! This hike will be led by MountainTrue's Ecologist and Public Lands Director, Bob Gale. The hike is on the Summit Trail, a 4-mile out and back trail, that offers spectacular views of Mount Jefferson, Grandfather Mountain, Mount Mitchell, and more!

Winter Tree ID Workshop Hike

Join MountainTrue's very own Public Lands Field Biologist, Josh Kelly for our Winter Tree ID Workshop Hike at Big Laurel Creek Trail. During this hike, we will discuss the different ways that you can identify trees in your area. This hike is open to all skill levels of aspiring tree identifiers so we hope to see you there!

Western Region Winter Tree ID Workshop

Join MountainTrue's very own Western Region Program Coordinator, Tony Ward, on March 20th from 10 am - 12 pm, for our Winter Tree ID hike at Lake Chatuge. The 1.2-mile loop trail at the Lake Chatuge Recreation Area Trail offers a tour along the lake shoreline which holds a wide diversity of native trees perfect for identification! During this hike, we will discuss the different ways that you can identify trees in your area. This hike is open to all skill levels of tree identifiers so we hope to see you there!

Signs of Spring Hike

This is a great late winter hike that follows the Green River offering continuous views of its quiet stretches to its most intense rapids. We'll look for early wildflowers and migrating warblers. Because it lies at lower elevations than more northerly mountain counties, temperatures should be mild and spring vegetation will be farther along.

Spring Headwaters & Wildflower Hike

Join our MountainTrue Ecologist and Public Lands Director, Bob Gale, and Broad Riverkeeper, David Caldwell, as we explore two trails in the North Pacolet sub-basin, a tributary of the Broad River. David will discuss the value and concerns associated with headwater streams, while Bob informs us all about the flowers, plants, and animals we find there.

Bearwallow CCA Spring Hike

This easy-to-moderate trail climbs one mile through the lovely mountain forest and opens up onto a large grassy field at the top. This spectacular summit will be the site for some guided reflection before looping back down the mountain. MountainTrue's Ecologist & Public Lands Director, Bob Gale, will offer some ecological insights along the hike. Once we reach the top of the Mountain Creation Care Alliance director Scott Hardin-Nieri, will provide some spiritual context around caring for our ecological neighbors.

Western Region Spring Hike

Join us for our Western Region Spring Hike! For this hike, we'll hike the Panthertown Valley Trail to Mac's Gap Trail, forming a loop. This is a moderate 5.6-mile hike with 895 feet of elevation gain located near Glenville, North Carolina in the Panthertown Valley area of Nantahala National Forest. There is lots of variety on this hike - streams, views, waterfalls, lovely forests, and beautiful varying terrain.
