Join MountainTrue's Americorps Water Quality Administrator, Mara Chamlee, to learn about her Master's Capstone work at Colorado State University focused on the Yampa River in Northwest Colorado. Although the Western United States faces a different set of challenges when it comes to water conservation, there are many lessons to be learned on how communities define what a "healthy river" means to them. Those lessons can be applied to river systems across the country and here in Western North Carolina.
On Thursday, February 10th, Virtual Hendersonville Green Drinks welcomes Chris Joyell, MountainTrue’s Healthy Communities Director, to discuss the concept of “smart growth,” looking at ways we can make our cities and towns more liveable.

Livestaking is the process of planting live cuttings of dormant trees in the riparian buffer zone along the stream bank which helps filter stormwater runoff, protect vital aquatic habitat, and prevent soil erosion and sediment pollution. As these planted stakes grow into trees, they stabilize the sides of the rivers and creeks where we plant them and reduce the overall amount of sediment and toxins getting into the river. Come plant with us at one of our livestaking work days from December through March!
Join Biologist Josh Kelly on a hike as we take the time to observe the surroundings and notice the ecological interactions that occur in the cold months. Along the way we will also practice our winter tree identification skills. Registration for this hike is required.

We rely on volunteers to help us monitor stream health throughout Henderson and Polk Counties and participate in biomonitoring twice a year, in April and October. Through the Stream Monitoring Information Exchange (SMIE) biomonitoring program, we sample aquatic macroinvertebrates, or aquatic insects, as indicators of water quality. Both new and returning SMIE volunteers are welcome.
