The theme for the 2013 festival is “A Climate of Change”.  Along with our usual line-up of beautiful, engaging and eye-opening films, we will have a particular focus this year on climate change, as well as highlighting the change makers who are creating a more livable future.

Considered one of the nation’s premiere environmental and adventure film festival’s, this year’s films combine stellar filmmaking, beautiful cinematography and first-rate storytelling to inform, inspire and ignite solutions and possibilities to restore the earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation.  Festival-goers can expect to see Award winning films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture, Native American and indigenous cultures.

This year’s selections will not only take audiences to some of the most remote and beautiful places on the planet, but introduce them to the magnificent animals that inhabit these places and the courageous individuals who are working to protect and preserve both for future generations.  The films instill a deep appreciation and a sense of wonder for the natural world that surrounds and supports us.

In summer 2010, photographer James ‘Q’ Martin and conservation biologist Chris Kassar started an organization called Rios Libres. The organization uses multi-media to join the fight to protect the wild lands of Patagonia from proposed dams that threaten two of the most pristine rivers in one of the world’s most spectacular regions. Last April, Q traveled south once again and landed in the thick of some of the largest anti-dam protests the country has ever seen. He captured historic footage of the protests, then spent nine weeks traveling the length of the country talking to gauchos, scientists, activists and the public in search of answers. The result is a solution-based film that addresses the hard questions that remained unanswered in Rios Libres’s first film: “What does an alternative energy model look like?” “How do the Chileans feel about it?” and “Could Chile become a global leader by gaining energy independence via green technology?”

Take Highway 105 toward Banner Elk. About 3 miles out of town (5 miles from the intersection of 321 and 105) you’ll turn right onto Broadstone Road. There is a traffic light at the intersection, as well as the 1861 Farmhouse Market deli. Go 2.8 miles on Broadstone, and our driveway is on the right just before the Mast Store Annex’s parking lot.

Take Highway 105 toward Boone. About 8 miles from the Tynecastle Shopping Center  you’ll turn left onto Broadstone Road. There is a traffic light at the intersection, as well as the 1861 Farmhouse Market deli. Go 2.8 miles on Broadstone, and our driveway is on the right just before the Mast Store Annex’s parking lot.

Take Highway 421 toward Boone. About 3.5 miles after the 421/321 intersection at Skate World, you’ll turn right onto Highway 194. Go 3.7 miles on 194, and our driveway is on the left just after the Mast Store Annex’s parking lot.
