Western North Carolina Farmer Resource Guide
Acknowledgements
This guide was authored by Olivia Gray during her time as MountainTrue's Climate Action Corps Community Stewardship Coordinator. We extend our gratitude to the farmers and partner nonprofits whose input and expertise were instrumental in creating this resource.
Introduction
MountainTrue’s commitment to our local food systems inspired this “Western North Carolina Farmer Resource Guide”, which serves as a one-stop-shop for agricultural producers in the region to find support for all aspects of growing crops and raising livestock. It compiles non-profit, local, state, and federal resources to streamline the process of finding the help you need, all in one place.
The guide emerged from MountainTrue’s “Farm Weather Impact Survey,” conducted during the 2024 growing season. The survey sought to understand how extreme weather is affecting agricultural production in the Southern Blue Ridge and identify the resources needed to improve resilience.
Categories in the guide are directly shaped by the survey results, including Climate Resiliency, Farmland Preservation, Land Trusts, Disaster Relief, Weather Reporting, Natural Resource Management, and Risk Management. Additionally, it covers a wide range of other essential topics, such as Business & Marketing, Certifications & Licenses, Equipment & Supplies, Labor, Education & Outreach, and Financial Support.
