Imagine if taking the bus was convenient, reliable, direct, and easy to access. Could this be the future of public transit in Asheville? Right now, Asheville is undergoing a redesign of our bus service and our city has an important choice to make about how we want this system to work. Do we want to decrease wait times on major routes (a strategy that is proven to increase ridership) by running more frequent buses on those routes while cutting routes to other parts of our city? Or do we want to prioritize sending buses to all parts of our community so that no matter where you live, you are likely to be able to use the service, even though your wait times between buses will be longer?
It is not an easy choice, but it is one we have to make as a community in the next few weeks. To help put this decision into context and understand the impact of the different options, MountainTrue is holding this community forum co-sponsored by Just Economics, AARP NC Mountain Region, and more. We’ll hear from national transit experts from Jarrett Walker & Associates, review maps of the city and possible bus route changes, and discuss our individual priorities in small groups. Come join us to talk about and weigh in on what we want our bus service to do for our community and how to get it there.
