Join members of the High Country Habitat Restoration Coalition on October 19th to remove non-native invasive species along the pathways and trails. Bring loppers, pruners, and gloves, if you have them. Dress in long pants and long sleeves, and bring a hat and water bottle. Work will take place for about 2 hours. Most importantly, bring your love of native plants and the outdoors!
Did you know there are over 30 Forest Communities in the Southern Appalachians? Join us as we immerse ourselves in the Tanawha Trail's spruce-fir Forest and High Elevation Red Oak Communities on a guided hike with our Public Lands Director and Ecologist, Bob Gale. We'll learn how to identify forest communities and individual tree species, including Red Spruce, Fraser Fir, Yellow Birch, Fire Cherry, Mountain Ash, Sugar Maple, and more. We'll also take in stunning valley vistas surrounded by neighboring Ravens Rock, Table Top, and Hawksbill Mountains. This strenuous 4-mile hike can be steep in a few places, and various rocky areas make footing somewhat tricky. Please consider your ability to climb over rocks, traverse root systems and maintain physical balance before signing up for this hike. Registration is required.

Visit the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum’s Exhibition Trash Trout Picture Show to learn about microplastics and the collaborative community partnerships with Appalachian State, Watauga Riverkeeper, and New River Conservancy. With trash collected over the past two years, filmmaker and visual artist, Tom Hansell, has created an eye-catching exhibit that speaks volumes to the work being done by our local riverkeepers.
Livestaking is the process of planting live cuttings of dormant trees in the riparian buffer zone along the stream bank which helps filter stormwater runoff, protect vital aquatic habitat, and prevent soil erosion and sediment pollution. As these planted stakes grow into trees, they stabilize the sides of the rivers and creeks where we plant them and reduce the overall amount of sediment and toxins getting into the river. Come plant with us at one of our live staking work days from December through March!
