Join MountainTrue’s High Country water team and take the plunge to explore the unique ecosystems of the Watauga River through a guided snorkel trip. Much like ocean reef snorkeling, river snorkeling allows you an unparalleled viewpoint to explore all the nooks and crannies of your local river. By peeking under the water, you can find yourself swimming alongside darting fish or face-to-face with the tiny insect larvae that feed them. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a Hellbender. MountainTrue will provide snorkels, view buckets, and waders. Please, no children under 13 and we ask that all participants know how to swim. Registration is required.
Come join the Nonnative Invasive Plant workday at Valley Crucis Community Park in Valle Crucis, NC on May 29th from 3-5 p.m.
Come help sample microplastics! Volunteers collect surface water samples at designated sampling sites the first week of every month to be analyzed at the lab by staff. Data collected from a brief 10-20 minute stream cleanup is submitted to staff.
MountainTrue is once again hosting a two-week (June 4 - 19) regional BioBlitz, pitting four counties - Clay, Henderson, Madison, and Watauga - against one another to crown the champion of biodiversity in the Southern Blue Ridge. To kick off the event in Henderson County, MountainTrue is inviting the public to join us at Jackson Park, where expert naturalists will assist you in identifying some of the thousands of native species that can be found in the area and give you the tools to do this on your own. Learn more here!
Join us and some great local naturalists at Buck Creek for an in person BioBlitz event in Clay County! BioBlitz is an annual event - hosted by MountainTrue on iNaturalist - that seeks to get experts, naturalists, and curious others outdoors to document every living organism we can find. This year, we are again having a friendly regional competition. Here in the western region, Clay County will compete against one county in each of our other three regions to determine the 2022 champion of biodiversity! Advanced registration is required to participate in the in person event.
