Broad Riverkeeper is sad to announce that all May Saturdays Guided Outings will have to be postponed indefinitely. We just learned that contractors, hired by Cleveland County to remove Hurricane debris from the First Broad River, will be working in the entire 50 miles of the waterway over the next few months. We scouted and cleared the first three sections that we had planned for outings. But we don't have a schedule from the contractors to know when and where they will be working. New potentially dangerous obstacles may be created as the work continues. We recommend that paddlers stay off the First Broad River until we know more as the work progresses. Stay safe! Contact David, your Broad Riverkeeper, david@mountaintrue.org if you have questions.
Our region’s rivers were heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene, and with breweries playing a key role in our tourism economy, MountainTrue, the French Broad Riverkeeper, and New Belgium are teaming up to help restore our waterways.
Join us on June 7 for a river cleanup! We'll head out for an on-the-water cleanup, then return to the brewery to celebrate with beer and prizes.
We need to protect the night sky if we are to conserve biodiversity in our natural world. This presentation, by Joey Bishop, will focus on the negative effects of light pollution on amphibians, birds, mammals and insects. It will also outline simple steps we can all take to reduce light pollution.
Joey Bishop serves as the AmeriCorps Project Conserve Community Engagement and Education Associate at Conserving Carolina. She grew up in Wisconsin and received undergraduate and graduate psychology degrees in New York before moving to North Carolina. Joey loves learning about and exploring nature, and she has enjoyed many tranquil hours hiking throughout the U.S. and beyond. Joey supported families of infants and toddlers with special needs for 20 years as an early intervention director, and she was an elementary school teacher for 4 years. She is excited to engage with communities as they find more ways to explore, appreciate, understand, and protect our natural world.
Come join the French Broad Riverkeeper as we clean up the trash left behind by Hurricane Helene in Buncombe County. We will be removing trash and debris along the riparian areas upstream and downstream. Please note this will be a land-based cleanup.
We are so excited to have an information table again this year at Boonerang... a FREE music & arts festival in Downtown Boone! Come visit our Clean Water team and learn what we have been up to this year on and off the river. Hear how you can support our work and help protect the places we share!
We will also have new MountainTrue merch and stickers available.
SAVE THE DATE! Each year, MountainTrue hosts a BioBlitz to record all the species we can find in a given area. We identify and catalog organisms using the online app iNaturalist. The BioBiltz this year will be on June 21st at Hickory Nut Gap Farm near Asheville, NC.
