MountainTrue will keep you healthy this river season.

MountainTrue’s Swim Guide bacteria monitoring program keeps you up-to-date with the latest water quality results for the Southern Blue Ridge Mountain’s most popular water recreation sites.

From May to September, MountainTrue volunteers collect weekly water samples from the Broad, French Broad, Elk, Green, Hiwassee, New, Notterly and Watauga river basins.

We process and analyze each sample and post the results online before the weekend so you know if it’s safe to swim.

French Broad Riverkeeper Hartwell Carson takes a water sample in order to track down a source of bacterial pollution.

Help make a difference

We use our testing data to track down sources of pollution and push for better policies to address the long-term issue affecting our rivers, lakes and streams. To learn more about our clean water agenda, check out iloverivers.org.

MountainTrue’s water quality program is powered by our volunteers, members and donors like you.

When you become a member of MountainTrue, you power:

  • Four Riverkeepers and a Western Region Clean Waters Team that work to reduce water pollution, minimizing levels of harmful bacteria, sediment and excess nutrients in our rivers, lakes and streams;
  • a Public Lands Team hard at work ensuring a management plan for the Nantahala-Pisgah National Forests that protects our natural carbon sinks, reduces habitat destruction, and promotes biodiversity;
  • a Land-Use Team that promotes smart growth and community planning so that our continued growth doesn’t come at the expense of our environment; and
  • an Energy Team that has successfully fought to move our region away from coal and is helping to lead us toward a renewable energy future.

MountainTrue’s Public Lands Field Biologist Josh Kelly documents the age of a 200 year-old tree as part of our objection to a timber sale.
