Wildflower Walk and Garlic Mustard Pull 4/28/23

Join MountainTrue staff for what should be peak wildflower conditions along a beautiful section of the Appalachian Trail near Hot Springs. We will hike five miles round trip to pull garlic mustard in the AT corridor and enjoy the sights and sounds of spring along the way. The hike is very strenuous.

Join MountainTrue’s Ecologist and Public Lands Director Bob Gale for a gorgeous and educational hike through Pisgah National Forest. We will be hiking the Pilot Cove Loop Trail which is approximately 4 miles long. This hike offers everything from wildflowers to forests.

Lewis Creek Preserve Nature Walk in Hendersonville, NC 6/7/23

Lewis Creek Preserve is an eight-acre preserve protected and managed by Conserving Carolina. MountainTrue Ecologist and Public Lands Director Bob Gale will lead a slow hike along the nature trail, interpreting the plant life, wildflowers, and value of pollinators on this property. The boardwalk overlooks an example of the remaining rare Southern Appalachian Bog ecosystems. Bob and MountainTrue have special expertise in managing these bogs and in addressing their threats, including non-native invasive plants.

2023 MountainTrue-a-thon

Calling all hikers, bikers and paddlers! Raise money for MountainTrue while doing your favorite activities this Summer. Participants of any experience level collect pledges from family and friends for miles completed between June 15 and August 31st.

Craggy National Scenic Area Hike near Barnardsville, NC

Join MountainTrue for a hike in the proposed Craggy Mountain National Scenic Area. The Craggy Mountains are one of the mightiest mountain ranges in eastern North America and are traversed by the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Bartram Trail Hike: Jones Gap to Whiterock Mountain

This 4.6-mile lightly trafficked section of the Bartram Trail near Highlands, NC features spectacular views into the Tessentee Valley of Macon County. Jones Knob and Whiterock Mountain are a pair of peaks that lie along this rather tame stretch of the Bartram Trail, one of North Carolina's premier long distance trails.

Woody Ethnobotany Walk near Weaverville, NC

Herb Mountain Farm

Come learn more about the food, medicine and craft uses of woody plants. We will take a walk and practice ways to systematically identify trees, shrubs and vines by their bark, ecotypes, flowers, fruit and growing conditions.

Old Growth Forest Hike near Barnardsville, NC

This hike will explore an old-growth, high elevation oak forest in the proposed Craggy Mountain National Scenic Area. The hike will be partially off trail, traverse steep, rocky terrain, and be very strenuous. During the hike we will discuss tree identification, forest ecology, and traits of old-growth forests, among other topics.
