Join us Saturday, Dec. 8 for an instructional rock climbing day trip and nature program located in the beautiful and richly biodiverse Rumbling Bald area of the Hickory Nut Gorge.

Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast who has always wanted to experience rock climbing, but have never had the opportunity, or a seasoned climber who knows that some of the best rock climbing in the South is located in Western North Carolina, the WNCA December 8 outing is perfect for you.

*All ages are welcome.  Climbing options will range from easy climbs appropriate for first time climbers to more challenging routes for experienced climbers.  All participants should be in reasonable to good physical condition.

The Location:  Rumbling Bald Mountain is located on the north side of Hickory Nut Gorge.  Rising from a mature forest of chestnut oak and hickory oak, its cliffs and domes offer optimal climbing opportunities.  Located fifteen miles southeast of Asheville and one mile northwest of Lake Lure, the unique beauty of Rumbling Bald is easily accessible from Asheville and the surrounding area.

The Guide:  Ryan Carlson director of Black Mountain Expeditions is the certified climbing guide who will lead this trip.  Ryan has a B.S. in Outdoor Education; experience leading expeditions in Bolivia, California, New Hampshire, Washington, and Wyoming; and numerous certifications, including those from American Alpine Institute, Wilderness Education Association, and the Professional Climbing Guides Association.

The Education:  The day will begin with a 20-minute hike to the climbing area, led by James Ledgerwood, who is the Acting Park Superintendent at Chimney Rock State Park.  He will share his knowledge of the ecology of Hickory Nut Gorge, which is home to thirty-seven37 rare species of plants and fourteen rare species of animals.  Participants in this outing will also learn about the ravens, bats, and a rare and endangered salamander that inhabit the cliffs, crevices, and caves of Rumbling Bald Mountain.

The Cost:  The cost of the outing includes all climbing gear necessary for the outing, such as shoes, helmets, harnesses, ropes, and belay devices.  The cost of the trip for WNCA members is $40 and the cost for nonmembers is $50.  The trip would be a wonderful holiday gift for friends or family members!
