Join WNCA Saturday September 7th for a trip to explore the unique freshwater ecology of the New River near Boone.  We’ll get out on the river on large tubes and snorkel gear for a three-hour+ float, stopping frequently to discover life under the water through snorkel masks from the comfort of your river tube.  413_1img_5228

River guide services will be provided by Kelly McCoy, fisheries biologist and founder of RiverGirl Fishing Company.  Kelly will lead the float and identify fish and macro invertebrates found in the river. Participants will bring a picnic lunch that will be enjoyed out on the scenic New River.  On the last section of the float those who want to can “dive in” for a closer look underwater and help search for the giant hellbender salamander (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis).

A rideshare will be organized from Asheville to the New River put-in near Boone, NC.  This will be an all-day outing meeting at RiverGirl Fishing Company at 11 AM and finishing the float by 4 PM.

In the event of inclement weather we will plan to re-schedule the trip to the following weekend 9/14 or 9/15.
