Guided River Snorkel near Sugar Grove, NC 7/30/22

Join MountainTrue's High Country water team and take the plunge to explore the unique ecosystems of the Watauga River through a guided snorkel trip. Much like ocean reef snorkeling, river snorkeling allows you an unparalleled viewpoint to explore all the nooks and crannies of your local river. By peeking under the water, you can find yourself swimming alongside darting fish or face-to-face with the tiny insect larvae that feed them. If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a Hellbender. Registration for this event is required.

Rufus Morgan WaterFall Hike & Wayah Bald Visit near Franklin, NC 9/9/22

Spend the morning in the heart of Nantahala National Forest with MountainTrue western regional director, Callie Moore. We'll start with an easy-to-moderate 1-mile loop hike that includes beautiful Rufus Morgan Falls. Then we'll drive to Wayah Bald, stopping at the historical Wilson Lick Ranger Station. At Wayah Bald, we'll take an easy short hike from the summit parking area and climb an old stone fire tower, built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, to witness panoramic views that on clear days extend all the way to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Registration is required for this event.

Want to get outside and on the water this Spring? Then join our Green Riverkeeper for a trip down the Lower Green River! This section is perfect for anyone looking for a casual Class I-II whitewater rapid experience. We'll equip each paddler with safety gear and your own inflatable kayak. The trip covers approximately 5 miles over 4 hours. Registration is required.

Waiting List: Urban E-bike Tour through Downtown Asheville 9/17/22

Join MountainTrue as we team up with Flying Bikes Tours to take out a fleet of electric bikes! We will pass through downtown, where Chris Joyell, Healthy Communities Director, will share his extensive knowledge about Asheville's urban core, including stories of how redlining has shaped our city and what the future could hold for Asheville. With the bikes, we will expand our range, pedaling through the River Arts District and the Southside, experiencing the highlights (and lowlights) of Asheville's bike infrastructure. We will stop frequently to hear from Chris about the history of development in these areas and what the future might look like in these places. Registration is required for this trip.

Mountains-To-Sea Trail Hike in Haywood County

Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 425.4

MountainTrue's Western Regional Director, Callie Moore will lead this easy to moderate fall scenic hike on a section of the Mountains-To-Sea trail accessed from a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway that tracks the Jackson-Haywood county line. This high-elevation out-and-back hike in the Middle Prong Wilderness affords sweeping views of our beautiful National Forests. Register to join us!

Pop-up Fall Float down the Broad River near Boiling Springs, NC

Broad River Greenway Canoe Access 126 Broad River Drive, Shelby, NC

Join Broad Riverkeeper David Caldwell for a fall float along the First Broad River. We will be paddling a beautiful and remote stretch of the Broad that few people get to paddle and enjoy! The first half of the trip will have some fun, easy class I and II rapids. The second half of this section is in slow-moving and still water, so we will need to paddle some (not just float) to reach the takeout on time. It is about a 4 to 5-hour trip. If interested we invite you to bring a fishing pole and some binoculars on this trip! There will be opportunities to fish and see wildlife! Registration for this trip is required.

WAITLIST: Forest Communities Hike near Linville, NC 11/11/22

Did you know there are over 30 Forest Communities in the Southern Appalachians? Join us as we immerse ourselves in the Tanawha Trail's spruce-fir Forest and High Elevation Red Oak Communities on a guided hike with our Public Lands Director and Ecologist, Bob Gale.  We'll learn how to identify forest communities and individual tree species, including Red Spruce, Fraser Fir, Yellow Birch, Fire Cherry, Mountain Ash, Sugar Maple, and more. We'll also take in stunning valley vistas surrounded by neighboring Ravens Rock, Table Top, and Hawksbill Mountains.  This strenuous 4-mile hike can be steep in a few places, and various rocky areas make footing somewhat tricky. Please consider your ability to climb over rocks, traverse root systems and maintain physical balance before signing up for this hike. Registration is required.
