MountainTrue University: Top Native Alternatives

For this week's MountainTrue University, we here from Tony Ward our Western Regional Program Coordinator. In his talk "Native Alternative to the Top Ten Least Wanted Plants", Tony will review our top ten least wanted and widespread nonnative invasive plants along with recommendations for native alternatives to replace them. This is a great place to start if you want to learn more about the damage invasive plants can do to our ecosystem and some of the native plants that you can plant instead.

Forest Plan Info Session: Invasive Species

Forest Plan Panel Discussion: Recreation

Join us for an online panel discussion via Zoom during which our staff and select guest speakers will explore issues of interest in the draft management plan for the Nantahala-Pisgah National Forests for recreation users such as mountain bikers, horseback riders, hikers, and paddlers. The speakers will discuss the plan alternatives and what they hope will end up in the final management plan. Please register in advance to submit questions for our panelists beforehand. We will also leave time during the session for live Q&A with the audience using the chat feature.

Fall Scenic Hike

Pilot Cove Loop Trail

Join MountainTrue's Ecologist and Public Lands Director, Bob Gale, for a gorgeous and educational hike through Pisgah National Forest. This hike offers breathtaking views of the fall foliage, and if we are lucky, we will catch glimpses of the Monarch Butterfly migration. Due to the pandemic, we are restricting group size for outings to 10 participants. Sign up today!
We will be hiking the Pilot Cove Loop Trail in Pisgah, which is approximately 4 miles long. The trail starts in a lesser known part of Pisgah National Forest and winds upward among the brightly colored sourwood and black gum trees. After opening up onto a beautiful rocky outcrop, the trails travels through recently logged forested as well as much older sections of forest. There are some steep inclines on this trail, but Bob will be making frequent stops to rest and interpret the flora and fauna.

Virtual Winter Tree ID Workshop

Join MountainTrue's very own Public Lands Field Biologist, Josh Kelly for our Winter Tree ID workshop on January, 19th from 12 pm - 1 pm. This class will be an online format and cover the basics of tree identification in the Southern Appalachians. We will cover the terms and concepts you will need to successfully identify trees in our area no matter your experience level! The class will include a presentation and time for questions and answers.

Winter Tree ID Workshop Hike

Join MountainTrue's very own Public Lands Field Biologist, Josh Kelly for our Winter Tree ID Workshop Hike at Big Laurel Creek Trail. During this hike, we will discuss the different ways that you can identify trees in your area. This hike is open to all skill levels of aspiring tree identifiers so we hope to see you there!

High Elevation In-Person BioBlitz in Jackson County

Richland Balsam Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway Richland Balsam Overlook, Canton

Join us and some great local naturalists for an in person high elevation BioBlitz event for Jackson County! This year, we are having a friendly regional competition. Here in the Western Region, Jackson County will compete against Watauga and Transylvania counties to determine the 2021 champion of biodiversity! Advanced registration is required to participate in this in person event.

Waiting List: Grassland Restoration & Fire Ecology Hike near Alexander, NC (3-25-22)

Join Biologist Josh Kelly on the Grassland Restoration & Fire Ecology Hike. On this hike will explore a shortleaf pine-oak savanna on Sandymush Gameland that is in the process of being restored. We will discuss diverse topics such as fire ecology, bio-physical characteristics of Blue Ridge woodlands and savannas, and native species associated with grasslands. Registration is required.

The US Forest Service released the revised Forest Plan for Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests on January 21. Join us for a look under the hood of the 2000 pages of the Forest Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement and what it means for one million acres of Western North Carolina.
