High Country Habitat Restoration Workday

Boone Greenway Parking Lot @ Hunting Hills ln 355 Hunting Hills Ln, Boone, NC

This workshop is hosted in conjunction with the High Country Habitat Restoration Coalition, a group of organizations dedicated to stamping out invasive species in the headwaters region of our mountains. Come join our group of experts to learn about some of the worst invasives in the region and help clean up the Boone Greenway. If the weather holds, we will be focusing on a spot that is tricky to access when the water is high. The dry weather might not have been welcome in many ways, but it is giving us a window to treat! We will also take a short walkabout and point out other invasive issues along the Greenway, and what is being done to protect it.

In his talk "Native Alternative to the Top Ten Least Wanted Plants", Tony will review our top ten least wanted and widespread nonnative invasive plants along with recommendations for native alternatives to replace them. This is a great place to start if you want to learn more about the damage invasive plants can do to our ecosystem and some of the native plants that you can plant instead.

MountainTrue University is a weekly speaker series where we connect with our community to share our knowledge on a variety of environmental topics. When you register, you'll receive the link to join the Zoom webinar. The recordings will be available the day after on our website.

Island Park Invasive Plant Volunteer Work Sessions

MountainTrue has joined forces with the Tuckasegee River Alliance to help eradicate nonnative invasive plants at Island Park in Bryson City. Island Park - which is currently closed to the public pending storm damage repairs - is an island in the Tuckasegee River that hosts a beautiful riparian forest with some very large trees. However, infestations of non-native invasive plant species threaten native diversity, especially in terms of wildflowers and forest understory, creating the need for restoration work to bring the island back to its full splendor.

Volunteer work sessions are being scheduled to start the work of eradicating these non-native invasive pest plants. There are three opportunities this fall to participate in. Advance registration is required. There will be two workshop sessions on Wednesday, November 11th, a morning session from 9 am to noon, or an afternoon session from 1 to 4 pm. A third workday is planned for December 12, from 11 am to 2 pm. Each work session is limited to 15 participants.
