Big Sweep at Westfeldt Park

Westfeldt Park 83 Fanning Bridge Rd., Fletcher, NC, United States

Join MountainTrue for the annual Big Sweep clean up - the biggest river clean up of the year! We'll be cleaning up the section of the French Broad from Lazy Otter Outfitters to Westfeldt Park. We will meet at 10:00am at Westfeldt park and then run a self-shuttle to Lazy Otter Outfitters to put in. Plan to bring your own boat, all your own paddling gear, water, sunscreen and food for the day. We will provide trash bags and gloves. Asheville Greenworks will be running clean ups on the sections of the French Broad near Asheville, so we'll join them afterward at the Zen Tubing location on Riverside Drive for awards, refreshments, and to celebrate our accomplishments.

WNC Big Sweep is a partnership of MountainTrue and our French Broad, Green, Broad, and Watauga Riverkeepers, Asheville Greenworks, Mills River Partnership, and RiverLink working together to clean as much litter and debris from WNC waterways in a unified effort.

Paddle-n-Plant Workday

The French Broad Riverkeeper and MountainTrue are combating sediment erosion in our local waterways. Sediment is a major polluter in our river basin, clogging fish and aquatic habitats, increasing water temperatures, and transporting toxic substances. We are helping to reduce the amount of sediment that flows into our rivers by planting live-stakes along eroding riverbanks. These stakes will grow into trees that will stabilize the sides of the rivers and creeks where we plant them, and will reduce the overall amount of sediment getting into the river. So, come hop in a boat and help us reduce erosion along our local rivers!

Beer Series with the Wedge Brewing

Despite the unusual times we find ourselves in, there is still trash collecting in our river. We hope that as many folks as possible can help us clean up the French Broad, but know that we can't all be on the river together. We are offering a limited capacity in person clean up as well as a virtual clean up with the Wedge on August 1st. There are prizes from ENO for the most interesting finds for both virtual and in-person participants!
