Waiting List: Lewis Creek Preserve Nature Walk in Hendersonville, NC 6/23/22

Lewis Creek Preserve is an eight-acre preserve protected and managed by Conserving Carolina. MountainTrue Ecologist & Public Lands Director, Bob Gale, will lead a slow hike along the nature trail, interpreting the plant life, wildflowers, and value of pollinators on this property. The boardwalk overlooks an example of the remaining rare Southern Appalachian Bog ecosystems. Bob and MountainTrue have special expertise in managing these bogs and in addressing their threats, including non-native invasive plants. Registration for this nature walk is required.

Invasive Plant Walk and Talk in Hendersonville, NC 7/13/22

This walk will begin at Patton Park. The slow amble will feature stops along the way to look at a recent live-staking project and part of a streambank restoration in Patton Park. Gale will stop at a non-native invasive plant removal site, to see the progress, and walk the newly reinforced boardwalk into the swamp, a favorite spot for birdwatching. A short distance away, at the red kiosk on the greenway, the group will stop to admire the new native plant garden, established in the memory of Wes Burlingame. Registration is required.

WAITLIST: Forest Communities Hike near Linville, NC 11/11/22

Did you know there are over 30 Forest Communities in the Southern Appalachians? Join us as we immerse ourselves in the Tanawha Trail's spruce-fir Forest and High Elevation Red Oak Communities on a guided hike with our Public Lands Director and Ecologist, Bob Gale.  We'll learn how to identify forest communities and individual tree species, including Red Spruce, Fraser Fir, Yellow Birch, Fire Cherry, Mountain Ash, Sugar Maple, and more. We'll also take in stunning valley vistas surrounded by neighboring Ravens Rock, Table Top, and Hawksbill Mountains.  This strenuous 4-mile hike can be steep in a few places, and various rocky areas make footing somewhat tricky. Please consider your ability to climb over rocks, traverse root systems and maintain physical balance before signing up for this hike. Registration is required.

Waiting List: Green River Gorge Hike 3/18

This is a great late-winter hike that follows the Green River offering continuous views of its quiet stretches to its most intense rapids. We'll look for early wildflowers and migrating warblers. Because it lies at lower elevations than more northerly mountain counties, temperatures should be mild and spring vegetation will be farther along.
