Building Our City presents Centering Carbon Emissions in Planning

Webinar--online

Addressing climate change and carbon emissions is a crucial task. Moreover, unlike many other issues, it is one that local governments have substantial power to address. However, while comprehensive planning documents now often mention carbon emissions, it is rarely considered directly in decisions. Join us to hear from Jason Hardin, senior planner with the City of Raleigh, who will talk about how Raleigh has begun explicitly considering carbon emissions in all planning decisions. Building Our City with Heather Worthington

Webinar--online

Consider this: It is illegal on 75 percent of the residential land in many American cities to build anything other than a detached single-family home. Single-family zoning has recently come under scrutiny as cities grapple with a dire shortage of affordable housing. Often single-family zoning stands as the only impediment to denser, multi-family developments in “traditional” neighborhoods. Planners are now beginning to ask whether removing single-family zoning is essential in order to address our current affordable housing crisis. Join us for a virtual presentation with Heather Worthington, where she will examine the efforts that led to a seismic shift in Minneapolis zoning, as well as the challenges that remain.

Source Tracking in the French Broad: What is it, and what does it mean for our water quality?

Webinar--online

Source tracking. What is it? Why are we doing it? How does it help fix the French Broad’s E. coli problem? Join Hartwell Carson, the French Broad Riverkeeper, and Dr. Joseph Craine, from Jonah Ventures, in a webinar-based discussion about analyzing water samples for DNA. Being able to see what’s in our waterway, will help us tackle E.coli issues in a much more targeted way. Virtual Hendersonville Green Drinks November

Webinar--online

Join us on November 12th at 6 pm as we hear from MountainTrue's French Broad River Keeper Hartwell Carson about the many issues plaguing the French Broad River and what is being done to combat them.
The French Broad, like so many American rivers, was grossly polluted before the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972. Since the passage of the act, the river has rebounded and now supports a thriving recreation community, but there are still a lot of threats to the river. Recently the water quality has been getting worse. Many sites that the French Broad Riverkeeper monitors for E. coli, failed over 80% of the time during the summer of 2020. We can and need to do more to make sure we finally meet the goals of the Clean Water Act, providing fishable and swimmable river access to all.
